ADJUSTING THE SET SCREW ON HERMAN MILLER CLASSIC AERON CHAIRS:

The 'button' at the top of the gas cylinder contacts an adjustable screw button inside the chair base compartment. The height of the screw can be set from the top by turning it with a 5/32 Allen wrench. This adjustment can be made with the chair fully assembled - there is no need to remove the cylinder. Access the set screw from the "top" by removing the top of the plastic mechanism cover (which houses the chair adjustment mechanism) attached to the chair seat. That cover can be pried off without damaging it by inserting a flat screwdriver in the seam along its side and twisting. The set screw sits on top of where the cylinder inserts into the base and turning counter-clockwise (thus raising the height of the screw where it contacts the cylinder button) will allow the cylinder to function properly.
